Javier Arevalo

Image of plastic work.

Javier Arévalo was born in Jalisco and moved to Mexico City as a young man to study at the National School of Plastic Arts in San Carlos. After completing his studies, he traveled extensively throughout South America and continued to explore various continents throughout his life.

A talented draftsman and teacher, Javier shared his knowledge and passion for painting, lithography, and life with countless generations of aspiring artists. His guidance as a mentor left a profound and lasting impact on all his students.

With a vibrant and sociable personality, Javier loved spending time with friends, enjoying good food and engaging conversations. At Art21Studio, we were lucky to spend time with him and hear his captivating stories of adventure. We also had the privilege of collaborating with him on several sculptural projects, working in both bronze and polymers.

Throughout his career, Javier's work evolved constantly, shifting from realism to abstraction, primitivism, and back to magical realism. His artistic journey has left a profound and lasting mark on the history of Mexican art.

Arévalo's work has been showcased in numerous prestigious venues, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Switzerland, and the Museum of Modern Art in Tel Aviv, Israel. He has received multiple awards for his contributions to the art world, including the Salón Anual de la Plástica Mexicana Prize in 1969, the Engraving Prize at the Tokyo Biennial in 1970, and the Jalisco a las Artes Prize in 2000.
