Dale Evers - 5 cent coin

Manufacturing in MDF board, by CNC Router.

The artistic collaboration between renowned Californian artist Dale Evers and the Art21Studio team stands as a prominent example of creative and technical synergy in the production of contemporary sculptural works. The element shown in the images refers only to a section of a larger, comprehensive project, entirely conceived and designed by Dale Evers. The final piece consists of an impressive floor clock that reaches approximately 2 meters in height, integrating sculptural and functional elements into a single work.

For the creation of the clock face, Dale Evers proposed a large-scale reinterpretation of the iconic buffalo featured on the U.S. 5-cent coin, known as the "nickel." To achieve the necessary fidelity and detail, a three-dimensional (3D) scan of the original coin was performed, capturing its reliefs and textures with precision. This digital model was then enlarged to a diameter of 70 cm, adapting the image for integration into the clock’s structure.

The manufacturing process for the clock face involved advanced 3D CNC routing technology on MDF wood. The carving of the piece was meticulously planned, divided into approximately 10 distinct stages or passes, each using specific cutting bits depending on the required level of detail. The procedure begins with coarse cutting tools, intended to remove the largest volume of material and define the basic shapes; intermediate bits are used next, and finally, the finest bits are employed to highlight meticulous details and enhance the richness of the relief.

Once the final pattern was obtained in MDF wood, a special mold was created, designed to support the glass casting process. This mold enables a faithful reproduction of the sculptural design in a translucent material, giving the clock face a unique and sophisticated visual presence that merges technical precision with artistic expressiveness. The result is a central piece that not only serves a practical function within the clock but also becomes a sculptural element of high aesthetic and symbolic value within Dale Evers’ overall project.
