Guillermo Campos (CNC polystyrene cutting)

CNC hot wire cutting of expanded polystyrene shapes.

The manufacture of a pattern in expanded polystyrene, scaled to three times the original size, has as its main objective to enhance the presence and visual impact of a previously created work by artist Guillermo Campos. To achieve a faithful and precise reproduction at a larger scale, the process begins with a three-dimensional scan of the original piece, using advanced technology that captures every detail and proportion of the model. Based on this scan, a digital mesh is generated, which is carefully edited and optimized by Art21Studio’s digital design specialists to ensure that the geometric information is compatible with hot wire CNC cutting systems.

The next step consists of physically materializing the pattern using expanded polystyrene, chosen for its lightweight properties and ease of handling, which allows for working with large pieces without compromising cutting precision. Once the basic shape in polystyrene is obtained, the modeling team revisits and refines the original details, also adding new elements in modeling clay to enrich the aesthetic proposal and ensure that the final pattern reflects both the essence of the work and the artistic enhancements conceived during the process.

This expanded polystyrene pattern, now perfected and with all details integrated, is subsequently used as the basis for creating a specialized mold. This mold is fundamental for continuing with the artistic casting process, specifically employing the silicon bronze technique using the “lost-wax” method. This methodology guarantees the production of a high-quality sculptural metal piece that preserves the integrity of the details and the original artistic vision, while also allowing its reproduction at a large scale for exhibitions and art collections.
